For Its Next Trick, Balenciaga Has Made an IKEA Shopping Bag, but Fashion

Categories:Other Brands

Folks, I don’t know how to explain this any better than the photo above already does. Most of you are probably familiar with IKEA’s big, blue shopping bags, which are awkwardly constructed in the exact proportion that would be necessary to carry a brand new set of modular Swedish golf clubs, which is the only thing IKEA doesn’t make. I see these bags practically every day, because they’re what the manchildren who populate my trendy Brooklyn neighborhood use to carry their belonging to the wash-n-fold, even though real IKEA bags are fully open at the top and not at all suited to keeping your dirty undies secure for a few blocks. Literally just buy a laundry bag, guys, they’re $6 on Amazon!!

Balenciaga creative director Demna Gvasalia is a big fan of taking the concepts of street fashion to their logical extremes, and in that sense, I guess we should have seen this extremely literal take on every college student’s favorite moving supply coming. After all, Gvasalia peppered his first-ever Balenciaga women’s runway with luxe leather versions of the coated textile totes that New Yorkers probably recognize best as the bags indigent people in the city often use to move around their worldly possessions, so there was really no other way this whole thing could go. In Hindsight, I Suppose We’ve Been Barreling Toward This Weird Conclusion For Quite A While is, after all, the theme of the past several years at least, both in fashion and in culture at large.

So now we’re at this delicate point in time, in which it’s hard to separate parody from reality on any plane of existence, and you can either go to IKEA, get some meatballs and pay a buck for a bag, or you can buy the leather version from a luxury retailer (MR PORTER, specifically) for $2,145. Oh, and the leather version is exactly the same shade of blue as the original, lest you attempt to explain away the similarities of the two as simply a coincidence of functionality. Gvasalia is practically daring you to try. There’s one important difference, though: this version zips, so at least your boxers won’t sail away down the block. That would be embarrassing.

Balenciaga is redefining the bag game industry and as far as we can see, it is doing a great job at it. Take for example this Balenciaga Scaffold Shopper Bag from the Spring 2017 Collection which is designed by its Creative Director Demna Gvasalia and you’ll know what we are talking about.

Taking its inspiration from the everyday rubble sacks often found on construction sites, this design has been carefully and meticulously crafted in Italy from leather and comes with a detachable tag and hand-braided handles. This Scaffold Shopper Bag will definitely bring a dose of cool to your everyday ensembles.

Made from lamb leather and calf leather, this bag is all about the details! It has a two-way zipped top for an added security and looking inside, it has an internal zipped pocket and slot pocket for compartments.

Measuring 12” x 12” x 5.5” (H x W x D) inches and is priced $1955 USD, €1595 euro, ¥204000 JPY, $16000 HKD, $2985 AUD via MyTheresa.

Balenciaga Blackout City S

Categories:Other Brands

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. So when Balenciaga came out with its new interpretation of the house icon, the City, it did make me wonder. Were people falling out of love with the original that came complete with hardware and studs aplenty, or was it simply a case of taking the icon a step further and offering it in a completely new light?

And while I won’t have the answers to both questions anytime soon, I do know this. The new Blackout City is a minimalist delight, stripped of almost everything that’s most recognisable about the original City. What’s left are the ‘holes’ and perforated lines where the hardware would have gone for a look that’s definitely cleaner and slicker than its predecessor. Available in at least 3 sizes at the moment; the S measures some 24 cm by 15 cm, while the one in L comes in at 38 cm by 26 cm, which also means you’ll have options if you want a small going-out number or a larger one that’s good for work.

Priced at GBP1195, GBP1545 and GBP1885 respectively for sizes S, M and L, you’ll find all 3 sizes in various colours now via Net-A-Porter, or you could head down to Balenciaga boutiques in Singapore to pick out the one that will suit you the most. But before I go, here’s something to note. Just because it is now minimal doesn’t mean it’s lighter. With the hardware gone, there’s actually now an extra layer of leather on the bag for that can-see-through-cannot-see-through effect, so as far as its weight is concerned, I reckon it is pretty much the same.

Balenciaga Bazar Shopper XS

Categories:Other Brands

Love them or hate them, the Bazar Shopper totes have been bestsellers since the day they were launched, an updated nod to the cheap plastic carryalls you’ll find at most any wet/wholesale market around the world. Made of leather (not canvas or plastic, mind you), Balenciaga has introduced a new size for the season, a smaller-than-small variation that’s simply known as the XS (or Mini, as she is also known).

Measuring a wee 23 cm by 22 cm, the almost-square mini tote comes adorned with a long shoulder sling, which allows one to sling it across the body if you so choose. Or, you could just carry it by its short top handles, which would also work well. Then there are the many, many different colour combinations it comes in, to a Green/Blue/Red/White multi-combo that you’ll only find online via MATCHESFASHION.

Affordably priced (and considering they are made of full lambskin leather as well), they retail for GBP885 on Net-A-Porter and around SGD1400 via MATCHESFASHION. And with Lunar New Year just around the corner, might I also add that these bags, small as they might be, will be ample enough for all the red packets you’re going to collect?

Balenciaga's spring 2017 campaign.

Can you see yourself wearing head-to-toe spandex this spring? If not, perhaps Demna Gvasalia's latest Balenciaga campaign will convince you to consider it. The award-winning designer used plenty of the fetishistic material (and '80s/'90s workout staple) in his second collection for the French fashion house, which debuted in Paris last October.

Gvasalia continues to eschew famous faces (read: Instagirls and celebrities) for his Balenciaga ads, instead relying on a cast of recent runway show models Alek Wek, Shujing Zhou and Eliza Douglas to star in the spring campaign. A spokesperson has also confirmed that Carla Daher, Litay Marcus, Amandine Renard and Sunniva Vaatevi will appear in the campaign as subsequent images continue to be released throughout the season.

Styled by Gvasalia's longtime collaborator Lotta Volkova and photographed by Harley Weir (they've both walked the Vetementsrunway in seasons past), the imagery mainly takes place against a draped curtain, which makes for an interesting composition with the collection's bright spandex and Douglas's shiny hooded rain coat.

Balenciaga's spring 2017 campaign.

With spring magazine covers and fashion issues about to debut, we wonder whether Balenciaga's statement-making spandex will follow the trajectory of the brand's popular puffer jacket last fall with a lead on styling credits. We've already spotted the electric purple and pink look on German Vogue's February cover starring Toni Garrn, as well as on Marie Claire's February cover featuring Claire Danes. In addition, Gisele Bündchen apparently has something in the works with Mario Testino wearing several looks from the label's collection.

Perhaps you should plan a thrift store trip to stock up on spandex sooner rather than later.
